Fishing & Angling

The Cavan waterways are Ireland’s premier location for game and coarse fishing and have some of the cleanest and most lightly fished fresh waterways in Europe.
For trout fishing, few areas are better in Ireland than the Lough Oughter and Erne River areas of County Cavan. The massive nearby lake and river systems provide great opportunities for top class angling.
The variety of fishing available includes perch, trout, salmon, pike, bream, roach, tench and rudd.
Belturbet is a very popular destination among the angling community because of the area’s plentiful fish stocks and excellent amenities. The Legend goes that there is a lake in Cavan for everyday of the year. Thus there are plenty of opportunities for fishing, watersports, exploration of disappearing bog lands and appreciation for the source.
Course & Game Angling
Course angling remains one of Cavan’s most popular attractions, but there is also game fishing for brown trout in Lough Sheelin & Annagh Lake. There is specifically brown trout stocked on the river and all this just 200 yards from the door of Church View Guesthouse! The angler seeking large open waters with the promise of outstanding bags of Bream and Roche can choose from the wider stretches of the rivers or large lakes such as Gowna, Oughter, Sheelin, Upper Lough Erne, Lough NcNean.
For the Fishing Fanatic, the nearest lake is 5 minutes from the door.
Many anglers base themselves here in Belturbet and travel to other competitions from here. For a list of other local competitions see www.activeirishangling.com
We have a walk-in cold room and tackle shed for storing fishing bait. Bait and boat hire can be easily arranged for. We can also provide fishing maps and advise on fishing expeditions on the nearby waterways. More photos from previous guests are shown below.
